This is long overdue, especially given the size of the project now.

I'm going to use the widely adopted Contributor Covenant:

https://docs.github.com/en/communities/setting-up-your-project-for-healthy-contributions/adding-a-code-of-conduct-to-your-project says this should be called CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md in order for GitHub to pick it up.
