HACK SIV — Sat Aug 10 — End of Day Report #222

Description

@arianabuilds

Yet another day of countless deep conversations about how to enable internet voting securely. We’ve noticed that the majority of people want to use SIV, which is wonderful to hear. And those who are skeptical, they are still interested to understand it deeply, while appreciating our approach - “We don’t want this to be forced on anyone, we are simply proposing this as a third option, in addition to in-person & mail.”

Also we have really enjoyed seeing people sit down at the table and poking at the system, trying to mess with it.

  1. A few more submissions today: https://github.com/siv-org/siv/issues

  2. Today someone demonstrated a very impressive in-person spyware attack, based on very quickly installing malware while holding an unlocked phone for just a few seconds. It allowed the attacker to view the phone’s screen remotely, including private vote content. SIV does not claim to protect against on-device spyware knowing your vote. However, for changed votes, SIV does have a number of ways to check for tampering, and allows remediation where necessary.

  3. Submissions end today at 10am, Sun Aug 11! Get your best hacks in & review the SIV Protocol for discovering vulnerabilities in the architecture itself.

  4. NOT FINAL YET! But we have preliminary HACK SIV Prize Scorings available. We’re still receiving submissions until 10am. But wanted to share this so everyone can see our reasoning. We are open to rebuttals if you can be persuasive that something should be scored higher or lower. Also, these numbers are only for SIV’s half of the prize. And note, as new submissions come in, they’ll necessarily push down existing ones, so don’t count your chickens before they hatch. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PLiGplqv6N22nn1fOg503_H_jq_1tsvAJnmAs-c-Axc/edit?gid=0#gid=0

  5. Today, after submissions close we will also hold the Public Vote Prize Allocation. You decide which submissions deserve the other $5,000!

To ensure One-Person-One-Vote, you must come visit us in person at the Voting Village HACK SIV table to finish registration. When the vote itself begins later, you’ll receive an emailed link to vote, so you can participate online from anywhere.

The Voting Village closes at noon, so come register before then!

Thanks for engaging!
