Windows 10- Autopsy 4.6 Hangs #3570

Hello All, I installed Autopsy 4.6 today on my win 10 v1709 x64 box. When I start it up and get to "open or create case" screen it is unresponsive. I cant click on anything except close. I tried opening and closing it with admin mode and that did not help.

Did not see an error log file in the install directory and looking at windows event logs I see this

Will try and uninstall and reinstall. But in case this helps anyone else. thanks

@ssvegeta96, you said there was no error log in the install directory. This is expected. The Autopsy logs are actually in two locations:

  • Before a case is opened, errors are logged to various log files in ~\AppData\Roaming.autopsy\dev\var\log. For example, on my development machine this log is located at C:\Users\rcordovano\AppData\Roaming.autopsy\dev\var\log. For Autopsy 4.6. the most helpful log(s) to start with will be the autopsy.log files and/or the messages.log.
  • After a case is opened, the autopsy.log files are written into the Log subdirectory of the case folder; the other logs remain in the previously described location.

Please check those logs for SEVERE error messages. Alternatively, if you are at liberty to send me the logs, I will take a look for you.

THIS is for v4.5 but it does the same thing. its a work laptop and the initial report was a personal laptop but same issue win10 autopsy 4.x and start it and just hangs.

But none of the logs from today showed any SEVERE message level. Il post personal laptop when time allows

same problem for me, except that Win10x64v1709 was on VM under
VirtualBox.
