Troubleshooting

  • Bad reception: If you are powering the radio with the 9V wall wart and have the USB FTDI adapter plugged in (maybe to program the board), the USB cable can create a large ground loop and cause interference. For best results, use the radio with only the 9V wall wart connected. You can try using a longer antenna. The longer the antenna wire the better and sometimes adjusting the position of the wire away from the rest of the circuit helps. Also, powering the unit off and then on can help sometimes.

  • Can't tune to a station: Make sure you are turning the knob at least 3 clicks. If you want to see what station number you are on, you can plug in a 3.3V FTDI to the 6-pin headers and view the serial output (at 115,200bps). Try adjusting the station up and down to get to the correct station number. The radio doesn't hit all of the numbers, just the ones with an RSSI to detect some type of audio.

  • Enclosure doesn't fit: The enclosure is press fit, which means the joints are supposed to be very tight. Some of the joints need a little coaxing and wiggling to get the correct fit, be patient and don't over force something. Also, repeated dis-assembly is not suggested since that wears the press fittings. If the joints become too loose, some Elmer's glue or wood glue will sure everything up.
