Steve opened SPR-8422 and commented

Unlike the mvc-showcase sample app, the petclinic sample app, from https://src.springsource.org/svn/spring-samples/petclinic/trunk (tip of trunk as of 6/8/2011), renders without styles and images, on "VMware vFabric tc Server Developer Edition v2.5" and "Jetty v7.2 Server".

This version of tc Server is the one installed by default with STS version 2.6.1.RELEASE.

The following attempted workaround, based on how mvc-showcase handles resources, failed too:
a) updating pom.xml property spring.version to 3.0.5.RELEASE
b) removing servlet-mapping of "/static/*" from web.xml
c) adding <mvc:resources mapping="/static/**" location="/" /> (so that /static/styles/petclinic.css maps to /styles/petclinic.css).

A SUCCESSFUL WORKAROUND was to deploy to Tomcat 6.0.26.

Chris,
Can you assign this to Josh Long. He maintains this sample.

Problem exists on Tomcat 7.0.26, too.

Still no resolution for this since the past 1,5 years? Any workaround, or is nobody running this way of app structure on Tomcat7 yet? Or is it a Tomcat7 issue, rather than an app/config problem?

Edit: I put up a fork on github that works on Tomcat7, working well with Spring 3.1.2 and using the mvc:resource tag to map the static resources folder, such as images and styles.

Not a Spring Framework issue...
