Tony Zeng opened SPR-16032 and commented

Tokenizer class uses the ch == 0 to check whether this expression reaches end, making it is impossible to use \0 in Spring EL like following:

#{#str?.split('\0')}

Affects: 4.3.11, 5.0 GA

Reference URL: #1540 (comment)

Referenced from: commits 03b6828, d0d4421

Backported to: 4.3.12

Thanks for raising this! Fixed through a larger revision of our Tokenizer implementation which turned out to have a few more quirks (including a double process() invocation!)
