Rossen Stoyanchev opened SPR-16253 and commented

ByteBufferDecoder, ByteArrayDecoder, and DataBufferDecoder all rely on the default implementation of decodeToMono which raises UnsupportedOperationException. That means a controller method cannot declare @RequestBody with byte[] for example, or likewise when using the WebClient. Those scenarios are perfectly valid, they rely on an explicit declaration, and should be work. This is also inconsistent with StringDecoder which does implement decodeToMono.
