Actually, placeholders are supported in namespace attributes as well... However, the "timeout" attribute in the tx namespace is declared as type integer in the XSD, which makes it reject placeholder string values. We'll revisit this in the 3.0 generation, possibly formally declaring such attributes as type string - expressing the actual target type integer in the form of other metadata that tooling may process.

Forgot to mention: There is a "defaultTimeout" property on AbstractPlatformTransactionManager since Spring 2.0.2 which can be used to specify default values across all transaction attributes - and which does accept a placeholder value!
