(Enhancement)
After searching for a native date picker solution, I came across the Sproutcore-UI [1] implementation. After cloning the presumably most up-to-date repo and modifying my Buildfile, I noticed that the 'canonical' implementation [2] has been moved to EmberJS add-ons.

My request is that the Sproutcore 1.X DateFieldView be upgraded to support (even in limited capacity) a date picker [3].

You are referring to two different projects which happen to share the same name. SCUI (Sproutcore-UI) which is a Sproutcore 1.x project maintained by Evin Grano and Sproutcore-UI which is now an Ember.js project.

The main repository for SCUI, which is what you're looking for, is at https://github.com/etgryphon/sproutcore-ui

I'd like to make a list of controls that we have and want to have then prioritize them. But I think this is a shoe-in now that browsers have native support for date pickers (see http://dev.w3.org/html5/markup/input.date.html and http://html5tutorial.info/html5-date.php for reference).

If we are to implement it, I vote to make the implementation match the feature set for <input type="date">.

When we do create a data picker. Should we keep in mind how it will work on a tablet? A date picker as shown in tim-evans example works for desktop. However, if used on a tablet then the controls will need to be design for a finger and not cursor. This statement may be opening a larger issue and that is touch (tablet) specific controls.
