I finally gave up making this work with DJango 1.9, and used https://github.com/jrief/django-websocket-redis instead, which seems more active.

If I need to use socketio I would love to be involved in your project, have you any idea how much work is needed for upgrading to the last version of socketio an if it could be usefull to do so ?
