  1. On the first successful mkdir, grab a stat of the parent thing.
  2. Whatever the owner uid/gid of that thing is, go through and chown all the created directories to have that same owner.

Reconsidered. This is actually not standard unix behavior, and could lead to odd situations. Modules that care this much about ownership (eg, npm and node-tar) probably already need to manage this in their own ways anyhow, and can use a higher level library for it (eg, fstream).
