Truchet Tiles date back to the 18th century: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truchet_tiles They can be used to produce many beautiful and interesting patterns.
This also updates the "randomize" UI element to make it prettier at smaller widths. With this, I think this effect is ready to promote to nightly builds!

Truchet Tiles were officially named in the 18th century, but the core concept has been around even longer:
