tvmagic2

Takes a folder of files (e.g. .avi, .mov, .m4v) and adds them to iTunes, populating metadata using TVRage.com whenever possible.

.avi files are wrapped in a .mov container that also has a 0 second h.264 clip, thus convincing iTunes to add it (and copy it to an AppleTV, which will play it if you have the necessary codecs installed). To do this you will also need to have the codecs installed on your Mac such that QuickTime can open the file and play all the parts.

Notes

  1. This is a rewrite of an existing app (tvmagic, written in ruby), it should be considered experimental at this stage.
  2. Built for Leopard and above (will not launch on Tiger or below). You'll should also upgrade to the most recent version of QuickTime you can. (Tested with QuickTime 7.6)
  3. That you are comfortable with SQLite if you want to override the automatically detected show IDs / naming.
  4. Standard shows are detected using the format Show.Name.S{season}E{episode}.*.{type}. They are then stored in TV/Show/Season {season}/{episode} {title}.{type}
  5. There are special cases for a handful of tv shows, to allow for date based names (typically Show.Name.MONTH.DAY.YEAR.Guest.Name.avi or YEAR.MONTH.DAY). These are stored in TV/Show/Year/Month/Day Guest.(type) To add more you will need to modify the code. The special cases are:
    • The Colbert Report
    • The Daily Show
    • Conan O'Brien
    • Jay Leno
  6. Movies can have a genre set by specifying the file name as Title.MOVIE.Genre.{type}, they will then be moved to Movie/{Genre}/{Title}.{type}

Some data is cached from TVRage - specifically the show name (as seen in file names) to TVRage ID, this also allows to override what the application thinks is the actual show name. This file is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/TVMagic2/Cache.tvmagic2 (a sqlite3 database).
