<h1>
<font color="#CC0000">Final Version 2.0&nbsp;</font></h1></center>
<font color="#000000">The software has been rewritten and comes with a
complete new base system. Apart from changes to the event handling in our
<b>terminal
emulation</b> the base parts have only been portet to Java 2 to retain
the efficiency and speed of our well known terminal emulation. Both the
terminal emulation and the <b>telnet protocol handler </b>have been taken
out of the software to be available as standalone packages to be used by
other programmers. The new bus/event system that connects the plugins ensures
ease of use and allows the addition of self-written plugins. Features include:</font>
<ul>
<li>
<font color="#000000">full <b>Java 2</b> compatibility (works with <b>Java
1.1.x</b>! for now)</font></li>
<li>
<font color="#000000">currently <b>11 <a href="doc/plugins/">plugins</a></b></font></li>

<li>
<font color="#000000">configurable foreground and background color</font></li>

<font color="#000000">This version should <i>run with all runtime environments</i>
that are at least Java 1.1.x compatible. If you are working with an older
Java runtime environment (e.g. 1.0) please go to the <b><a href="http://www.first.gmd.de/persons/leo/java/Telnet/">old
Java 1 version</a></b> that will work with most currently available browsers.</font>

<a NAME="STATUS"></a><font color="#CC0000">Comments About this Release</font></h3></center>
Most of the requests we got have been included but some of it is more difficult
than imagined and sometimes difficult to achieve, like printing in applets.&nbsp;
<p>It turned out that the pass-through printing will not really work in
applets and so we have left it out for now. The stubs are in the code,
but it will come in a later release eventually.
<p>We have also as for now decided not to move on to a Swing based framework.
Most browsers around have a Java 1.1 compliant runtime and we don't want
to forces users to install the Java 2 plugin. It is planned for the next
release to move on and provide full Swing support.<i></i>
<p><i>Last but not least we would like to say "Thank you!" to everyone
who sent us comments, questions and bug reports and thus helped to make
the software better.&nbsp;</i>

<td NOSAVE>... is a fully featured <b>telnet</b> implementation coupled
with a very sophisticated terminal emulation for <b>VT</b> and <b>ANSI</b>
terminals.
<p>Telnet was one of the first protocols to be developed during the early
stages of the ARPANET that later became the Internet. telnet allows you
to login to another Internet location to gain access to databases, library
catalogs, and interactive environments.&nbsp;
<p>Despite its name, his software works either as <i>applet</i> or as
<i>application</i>.
The former is quite useful for service providers such as libraries or stock
tickers who would like to allow access to terminal driven applications
via the World Wide Web.&nbsp;
<p>End users may find the application mode interesting as it provides a
fast and reliable telnet implementation to login to other workstations
or text-based online games, such as MUDs.</td>
