I was recently trying to read a file not in the specified path. I received the error message:
Error in read_fun(path = path, sheet = sheet, limits = limits, shim = shim, : zip file 'C:/path/to/file.xlsx' cannot be opened

From check_file I would expect
'C:/path/to/file.xlsx' does not exist

The second message would be more informative as I initially assumed that the path was fine and that there was a problem with file.
