Right now it seems like there aren't any shells available on the system besides Bash. I won't protest if the answer to this is "that's the way we want it", but I remember picking a shell and experimenting with different ones as an important part of my early shell account experience.

Couple thoughts:

  • Zsh is really nice. It has features (like auto-cding on entering a directory name) that can save a lot of typing. A lot of the CLI heads I know have been leaning on it pretty heavily for years.
  • Some of my friends have been suggesting fish shell for novice use. It does some really cool stuff with autocompletion and colors.

I'm a bash kinda guy, but I know zsh has a following.

I've never heard of fish shell, but the documentation seems pretty well written and the syntax seems in line with other sh based shells.

👍 for adding more shell options if it's easy to accommodate (which since zsh and more should be in distro repositories I think it'd be easy to add).

I like fish too. I used it for a while. I installed csh, zsh, and fish too. Closing.
