Try installing stuff in a location with no spaces in the path.

Etherpad is in /etherpad/trunk/etherpad
Open office is in /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice

The exception itself comes from the OOo bindings. It may be that the hostname/port are wrong, or something else may be wrong. Somewhere in the logs there should be a better stacktrace showing which call actually failed.

If you want to ping me I'm happy to share a screen with you so you can see the logs

This means that EtherPad can talk to your OOo, but your OOo doesn't want to open the tempfile. Either your OOo just doesn't like file:// URLs (maybe this has been disabled or it's too new or something), or the JVM returns something unexpected for File.getAbsolutePath().
From here on you have to debug this yourself though.

Interesting:
ooconvert-7702830474265502255.doc
etc.

exist in /tmp

Does that change anything?

Hi,
I had this issue with etherpad, running OOo 3.1.1. An update to 3.2.0 with the packages from the OOo site fixed it for me!

Update of OOo to package 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1.3 (on Ubuntu 9.10 server) fixed the issue for me.
Mind having only one OOo headless running at once.
