fix unstable st_der() and more test coverage for numbertheory

hypothesis sometimes timeouts when creating the large signatures
when on Python 2.6, try to workaround it by generating smaller
structures (but still larger/more complex than anything we normally
have to deal with)
the regular tests don't verify the behaviour for small/negative
numbers, check that too
