The current hack where a marker-less series with two points is used for the baseline can be reimplemented the proper way: using a horizontal line instead. That is supported by jqPlot version 1.0 (canvasOverlay)

Also, jqPlot has a new feature that allows to show error messages (no data, for example): catchError.html
