The default Mastodon UI doesn't show old toots in Home timeline. Happens after 280 items or so. It can load new items (AJAX calls still work) but they don't appear in the timeline.

Firefox 62, stable Mastodon 2.4.3.

This appears to be related to #2301. Based on that issue, it looks like this is intentional behavior to limit memory usage.

I agree that it would be nice to have the option to scroll back further, though—especially as Mastodon has grown, it seems common to wake up to more toots than the default UI will display.

The home limit is 400 items, not 280, and OP says that the XHR calls work, it's the UI that fails to display them (JS bug?)

400 items seems to be a bit low. When you follow quite a few people and did not read your timeline for some time, you will miss status.
I did not encounter this on Mastodon yet, but on Twitter I have often a quite full timeline and there the limit is 3200 (minus retweets).

I'm not sure if this is a UI or an API issue, but yesterday I had Subway Tooter run out of posts after only being able to go back ~6h. I suspect it's not just the UI having issues...

Note that some toots can appear twice, three times in the timeline when different people repost same popular stuff. So 400 item limit is not always 400 new items.

Can’t we make this limit dynamic or allow the server admin to adjust it easily?

I’m running a single-user instance so memory usage won’t be a concern but with the current limit I’m only able to scoll back 2 hours, at most.

I often have this problem that I can't even see posts from this morning after I get home from work, which kinda seems a bit too much? Usually the oldest toot I can scroll to is ~6 hours ago. It's very frustrating especially when I'm looking for something and I don't recall enough information about the post to be able to search for it.
