Well it seems like it's broken again (#1111).

Actually the setting seems to be ignored as everything gets built for armv7s:

    Build settings from command line:
    OBJROOT = /Users/travis/build/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/Demo/build
    SYMROOT = /Users/travis/build/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/Demo/build
    TEST_AFTER_BUILD = YES

https://travis-ci.org/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/builds/9975914

Before setting xcode_sdk: iphonesimulator would correcly build against the i386 Simulator SDK:

    Build settings from command line:
    OBJROOT = /Users/travis/build/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/Demo/build
    SDKROOT = iphonesimulator6.1
    SYMROOT = /Users/travis/build/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/Demo/build
    TEST_AFTER_BUILD = YES

Sample project:
https://travis-ci.org/CyberAgent/iOS-NBUKit/builds/9125942

I'm having this same issue (I'm getting the famous 'Code Sign error'). Is there anything I can do to fix this since my build is failing?

I switched to xctool:

script: xctool -workspace NBUKitDemo.xcworkspace -scheme 'NBUKitDemo' -configuration Release \
-sdk iphonesimulator -arch i386 build

The important part being -sdk iphonesimulator -arch i386.
You can check here or here.

We are now using xctool by default, so I don't think this is an issue anymore. If you see this again, please open a new ticket.
