These BIFs (or at least one of them) is necessary for shell to work.

Yes. we need re:compile/3 and re:run/3 (the /2-versions are simple forwards to those). See module re documentation. It looks rather complicated; perhaps we can find a 3rd party contributor for this, it's a perfect independent project.

OK... I had hoped Java's regexp support could have been used.
But at least we can easily implement the "single character" subset, which covers the first two calls OTP makes.
