What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.i have a VPCF11Z1E running ubuntu 10.04 amd64.
2.i either click on suspend or hibernate, the screen shut off, also harddisk
but not the fan. the power led light is not blinking (just stay on)
3. i wait for a while and try to resume by slightly clicking on power button
but nothing happen. then the only choice is to press long time the power button
to switch off completely my vaio. when i restart of course it start from
scratch and i lose all openend windows.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Anyone having this issue ? i don't have this problem on windows 7.

ps: Seven is using easily for nothing 1,5 GB or ram, ubuntu just 350 MB !!
that's a big difference. i want my ubuntu working.

what is working well :
- nvidia (after active it and reboot i had to insert the 2 lines in xorg.conf
and it came back on the 1920*1080 resolution)
- sound speaker after downloading the package recommended in the issue for the
mic, and configure and make and make install
- bluetooth after update
- wifi ootb
- ethernet (strange) : just tried it. st nothing but after reboot and cable
already inserted, everything is fine
- sd card ok
- display off key working well

other issues :
- vertical / horizontal scroll on touch pad (but did not try to fix it till now)
- brightness : the keys are working but do not permit to change anything

thanks for your help and feedback

I also have the VPCF11Z1E, but I'm using gentoo, amd64, kernel 2.6.34. It also
worked with gentoo's kernel 2.6.32.

I think the main difference is that ubuntu has X.org 7.5 while I'm on 7.4. By
the way, are you using nvidia's drivers on the nouveau's driver?

For me suspend to RAM is working well, that is, I close the lid, the hard disk
suspends and the power button blinks orange. I open the lid, click the power
button and a few seconds after everything is running.

nvidia driver version is the 195.36.24.

is there any link between xorg and suspend mode ? i do not think so but i maybe
wrong ...

question : how can i try the web cam on ubuntu/linux ?
I know it is working as i tried to install a retail version of snow leopard and
during the logging setup i could see my face taken by the web cam (which
suprise me i can say ;)) ). Since the screen is not recognized (EDID problem
with sony screen i guess) i use osx through virtualbox and the better geekbench
score i got was 3699 which seems to be a good score regarding the scores on the
geekbench website.

I'm using the same nvidia driver version.

I think the main difference is that x.org 7.5 already has support for kernel
mode switch and ubuntu uses it, but as far as I know nivida-drivers doesn't
support it. On gentoo I don't have it enabled: I'm using uvesafb (user mode
vesa). VT switches just fine and I get 1280x1024 resolution on the text
consoles.

To try the webcam in ubuntu... that's gnome based. From the top of my head
cheese or ekiga will do. You can also go for skype, but skype is not open
source.

ok, still fighting for the suspend / hibernate feature to work !!

what i tried :
- make sure swap was enable so swapoff, blkid, swapon
- resume in grub file
- use s2ram -f

but nothing worked !

BUT i installed xfce and login in xfce : suspend is working !
but it doesn't in gnome !! Can someone tell me how to change something in gnome
to make it using same stuff as xfce ?
i do prefer gnome since :
- i prefer the look
- currently gnome is using only 350MB and xfce 1,4GB (which is strange but
that's the case)

Can someone help me ?

new progress :
- xfce had also the problem after a while
- coming back to gnome and reading bug pages regarding lucid ... like this one
which report the exact issue i have :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/554695
well i removed the sd card (i put it in the sd card slot just after the fresh
lucid install to verify it was working and never got it out) and tried to
suspend => work so resume ok ! it was this f____g sd card !!! hopefully i ll
find a way to suspend with a card mounted ! don't know if it goes the same with
a usb hardrive plugged !

Hi,

I use a Linux debian unstable with 2.6.34 kernel.

I have enabled the NVidia driver. I use Gnome + Compiz.

And I haven't issue with suspend or hibernate. Work well !

I have to do other tests. Then, I will confirm.

Regards,

Nicolas

I still can't hibernate. so going on suspend is not good enough as after a
while (and not long) in suspend mode the battery gets off.

If anyone is using lucid amd64 and could give me hopes !!

do i have to go on debian instead ?

I have 2.6.35 and suspend / hibernate is not working :(
before I added to kernel line acpi_sleep=nonvs but any Arch update broke me
again suspend/hib :(

Today I tried Ubuntu 10.04 livecd and suspend is there working without
problems...

I'm going to try Tuxonice but this is not very easy compile on arch (maybe I
made some mistakes but mkinitcpio was not find for example uvesafb module)

Also have the same issue Fedora 13 VPCF11. I've noted that I can duplicate the
problem when switching terminals CTRL+ALT+F7 and then switching
back,CTRL+ALT+F1 but not always. Incidentally, I can't see any virtual
terminals when switching.

I don't know if this helps, but I have a Vaio S series 12 and the
suspend/hybernate functions have worked wonderfully under Ubuntu 10.4.

Today, however I started to have problems with both functions. Apparently what
triggered the problem was a forgotten SD card in the slot. If I remove the
card, suspend works, and if I leave it in, it fails and I have to hard-reboot.

I'm posting this here because I've been using the information in this project
in order to get stuff working on my laptop, so I suspect the hardware is very
similar between the S and F series.
Maybe it'll help you guys get to the root of your problem.

After installing tuxonice on ubuntu 10.04 hibernate is now working.
For the moment i use the default config which store everything in the swap
partition.
I once have an unsuccessfull hibernate but it went back to my open session so i
lost nothing. I guess the where not enough space to store all my session with
the vmware systems opened.
Will try in future to store in a dedicated file.
So for me the issue is close for now on.

I'm also having issues with suspend-to-ram.

when running "hibernate-ram" everything seems to work fine, display switches
off and power led blinks orange.

but when i press a key or the power button, the laptop reboots - as if it was
powered down before.

has someone else experienced this behavoir?

@16 I have the same issue. The machine suspends okay -- all off, flashing
orange light -- but when resuming, it goes straight to a hard boot.

I'm running Ubuntu Maverick. Suspend worked 100% okay under Ubuntu Lucid.

I would like to find a detailed guide on how to diagnose resume issues. I'm
more than happy to do the legwork.

Anyone having issues with suspend/resume, please also take a look at the
following thread. It is on the Ubuntu forums, but the debugging is with the
mainline kernels.

@auxbuss Thank you! That link did the trick for me. I can now resume in
Ubuntu 10.10.

I'm now having a really odd problem though. After resuming my screen is dim,
and I don't have brightness control working. I can't figure out how to make it
bright again.

I noticed losing the brightness controls, as well. I'm lost as to when that
happened!

However, you can set brightness in the nvidia X control panel. It's under
"Color correction". The setting is also saved between reboots, which is useful.

@auxbuss The "brightness" control in nvidia-settings does not adjust the
backlight. It is better than nothing though. It adjusts the colors being
displayed, but the power of the backlight is not changed.

Tried many, many solutions -- nothing worked reliably, all hit or miss.
Installed acpitool and have gotten several successful suspend/resumes in a row.

pm-suspend did not work reliably, even with various --quirk* options set. Same
for kernel boot options, no affect, or detrimental.

Hope to have this one solved, days wasted, at some point you have to get some
real (paying) work done!

acpitool (i.e. from terminal, acpitool -s) has solved the suspend/resume
problem for me -- all suspend/resume successful now, while via gnome menu or
pm-suspend, 50% at best.

For those with the F13 and probably USB 3.0 issues when suspending/hibernating,
I found that there is a solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/522998

Posts #7 and #8 from the following Ubuntu forum have also solved my issues
(don't forget to switch 'xhci' for 'xhci_hcd', you can confirm it by running
the command 'lsmod | grep xhci' and cheking which module is loaded):

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444822

Also, due to issues with kernel 2.6.35 and 2.6.36 I have also changed my Grub
default configuration file, so the NVIDIA card is not an issue when resuming.
In attachment is my own "/etc/default/grub" file. If you want to try and change
yours, backup it first, change it and then run the following commands:

  sudo update-grub2
  sudo update-initramfs -u

Thanks - that would explain my problem on earlier kernels.

2.6.37 seems to suspend properly (although I don't know if USB 3.0 works, not
having any devices to test it - but lsusb picks up the 3.0 hub).

Please not, I have had problems resuming from suspend using the Nouveau drivers.

sigmadraconis you save my life with your grub file.
I've changed my GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT like in yours and execute the 2
commands you gave after saving my grub file. Now i can resume from hibernate so
i guess i also can resume from sleep mode. Before that i could hibernate or go
to sleep mode but could never resume.

only issue now : it seems my screen is not bright as it should. Don't know what
to do as the widget to control brightness is at the top of what it can. If
someone has an idea why i have that ? ...

Just a note on my GRUB file in comment #26, The argument "acpi_sleep=nonvs" in
the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT string is most likely NOT NEEDED. So, if some of
you are using this argument, you may want to try and update the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT string to not have this acpi_sleep argument and then
try and hibernate/sleep with your laptop.

See if it works!

If you get stuck trying to resume from sleep (i.e. keyboard responsive, but
black screen), try ctrl-alt-F2 and wait a sec for screen to turn white; then
double click ctrl-alt-F1.

Resume from suspend works 80% of the time for me, or more, but when it doesn't,
above trick comes to the rescue. Have not rebooted in weeks.

suspend still doesn't work for me on Natty.

it goes to sleep, but when i wake it, system reboots. hibernation works however.

additional info: i've just made a clean install from the latest 11.04 64-bit
CD. i made no changes to the system. it installed the nvidia-current driver by
default.
