This is another look at the topic discussed here #1267.
I just wanted to mention that github does seem to do what we're talking about, for example with the "Watch" button above this message. If you click on the "watch" button it will be focused but without the dotted lines, and yet you can have those lines visible through the Tab button.

If there was a way to implement it as an extra plugin, could it be for a future version?

Ah, good looking out—hadn't noticed that effect before. I've added the same styles to a mixin and applied it to links and buttons. Inputs are another story in IE, but I'll address that later.

Thanks for dealing with it!!
I think though that it affects all other browsers except from webkit.
