confirmed.

for whatever reasons, i can open the same files with gmerlin_play (at least it doesn't crash)

however, i just tested upstream's bgavdemux example program and it crashes as well when fed with a .png file.
so i'm tending to think that this is not a bug in Gem but rather in gmerlin-avdecoder.

otoh, bgavdemux seems to be able to (not) open a ZIP file without crashing.

using the latest and greatest gavl/gmerlin/gmerlin_avdecoder from SVN (their last release was 4 years ago, and this is what is packaged in Debian/Ubuntu/...), the zip-crash goes away with Gem and the PNG crashes the upstream tools.

so i'm convinced by now that this is a problem of the underlying framework. (bug reported upstream)
