Lots of good discussion from everyone!

Biggest changes:

  • Weeding out some of my verboseness (which, although lovely, is a bit superfluous)
  • Remove some of the focus on current events, especially at the end, and make it feel more timeless
    • We hope to keep these states for longer than just a couple years, right? 馃槃 馃嚭馃嚫

Give it a lookover, and please make sure I didn't miss anything!

No need to mention it's a self-assumed power
But "eat out their substance" got laughs and agreement!
No need to mention inherent
We decided "certain" is okay to say, since they're not necessarily inherent
Move earlier that we've petitioned for redress, and get rid of the tw鈥
鈥lve years thing

This should be timeless, so let's not talk too many specifics about years.
FOR depriving us of the benefits of trial by jury
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

John Locke in his infinite wisdom taught us the never ending principles of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Property". But what is the "Pursuit of Property" but the unending quest to elevate one's self to a place of productive leisure? To pursue happiness in its full glory!

Locke used the phrase "life, liberty and property", from what I remember. Not "pursuit of property".

鈥淧ersuit of Happiness" has nothing to do with leisure. At the time this was written, your pursuit was your profession and no one had the right to forbid you from practicing it. [By the wayside now as many professions require a license.]

He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating it鈥檚 most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere, or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither. This piratical warfare, the opprobium of INFIDEL Powers, is the warfare of the CHRISTIAN king of Great Britain. Determined to keep open a market where MEN should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or to restrain this execrable commerce. And that this assemblage of horrors might want no fact of distinguished die, he is now exciting those very people to rise in arms among us, and to purchase that liberty of which he has deprived them, by murdering the people on whom he also obtruded them: thus paying off former crimes committed against the LIBERTIES of one people, with crimes which he urges them to commit against the LIVES of another.

This is all true, passionate and well said. But could cut both ways since they found a market on our shores and the southern delegate has already expressed their intent to reopen the trade. Better to leave this part out.

WE hold these Truths to be self-evident: that all Men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with inherent and inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness: that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it鈥檚 foundation on such principles, & organizing it鈥檚 powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness. Prudence indeed will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light & transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses & usurpations begun at a distinguished period and pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government, & to provide new guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; & such is now the necessity which constrains them to expunge their former systems of government. The history of the present king of Great Britain is a history of unremitting injuries & usurpations, among which appears no solitary fact to contradict the uniform tenor of the rest but all have in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this let facts be submitted to a candid world for the truth of which we pledge a faith yet unsullied by falsehood.
We hold these truths to be self-evident:
that all men are created equal,

What about equality for slaves? Or women? Or the poor? Or basically anyone that is not a white-male farmer?

And Ben Franklin didn't have a github account (he used bitbucket just to be contrarian).

Given Franklin's inventiveness (and independent mindedness) my assumption is he ran his own git server.

This is such a cool idea! It'd be great if we could lock this PR and remove comments from non-historical figures (including mine) to cut down on noise. Some notes about the historical accuracy of the exact text of these revisions and statements from the founding fathers would also be great.

(Also, why are there 2 John Adams? @johnadams1776 @adams17761?)

Hey @Ajedi32 ,
Sorry for the slow reply - the two John Adams was a typo from when we created the accounts. It's fixed now.
A historical accuracy noted version would indeed be great - feel free to anyone to make a new PR!
