NPC mission: Scouts have located a facility with lots of terrifying mutated people outside (zombie mutants). Mutants seem to be coming from the facility. Find some way to neutralize the facility. Mission only appears if an overmap the player has visited has the facility.

Facility: Unique (per overmap or globally?), randomly generated mutation/cloning themed lab type facility. Features a primary elevator going to the main levels (5-6 levels), and a secondary elevator going down to the very bottom where boss fight is. Primary elevator will be blocked off after a certain number of levels, forcing the player to look for alternative routes or acquiring keycards for high security areas, etc. Upper levels would be offices, with lower levels trending towards higher security biological lab areas, with multiple airlocks and security stations. Primary enemies will be mutated scientists, regular mutated zombies, and regular zombie scientists. Alternate enemies would be regular zombies, zombie soldiers, zombified animals, and living animals.

  • Note: since it's unique, it doesn't really have to be randomly generated does it? Maybe have it follow a set layout, but certain tiles have variants that can present obstacles.

NPCs: Possibility of having a living mutated NPC inhabiting the facility. This NPC could be locked in a lab area, looking for some way to cure his afflicted coworkers. When the player engages, the NPC will ask how many mutated zombies/scientists the player has killed. If the player tells the truth and its a low number (25 or so? adjusted for spawn levels), the NPC expresses displeasure, but offers info about what happened. If the player tells the truth and its a high number, the NPC turns hostile and attacks player (NPC has been locked in lab, doesn't know what's really been going on outside, etc). The player has the option to attempt a lie check for a low number. If the NPC is friendly and alive when the player has defeated the final boss, then the player can escort the NPC to a computer in the boss area and the NPC will extract data for the player, providing them with special recipes, or other info. This info can be retrieved with high computer skill if the NPC does not survive or turns hostile, but the player will never be able to retrieve as much on their own as they could with NPC help. After leaving the facility, the player has the option to have the NPC join up, but the NPC believes they will not be accepted by other survivors because of their mutations. High speech skills may convince them to team up, but the player will also have to convince the settlement leader or whoever to accept them as well. If they aren't able, they may risk having their new NPC friend killed by the settlement guards. The interactions with this NPC could be affected by player mutations as well.

Boss: Mutated horror, changes abilities to match player weapons/strategies, has ability to periodically create more mutant zombies, possibly by smashing cloning vats containing mutants, or through some mutation.

Completing the mission: Nuke facility from a silo, defeat boss, or activate some sort of containment computer to seal the boss off from the world, or otherwise destroying/sealing the facility. Containment option would be some security terminal option to seal off the secondary elevator. This would cause a giant metal door to shut over the elevator doors or inside the shaft.

Reward: Promotion from quest giver? Depending on choice, the rewards from the NPC. A weapon of choice and ammo, tools, credit with the settlement?

Follow up missions: Stockpile purifier. Meeting of settlement leaders to determine the merits of continued use or study of mutagen, followed by missions to acquire samples of various mutagen types or research data, and possibly missions to find and assimilate/eradicate mutant humans (depending on outcome of meeting).

Issues: Multiple ways to complete mission may not be supported yet. Preventing player from cheesing the progression by blowing everything up with C4 (may not be that big of an issue).
