Here's some images. Trying to follow a similar style to Yarn's assets. The pimento inside the olive is sinopia colored 😆 The font in the banner is the Niconne Font.

I'd like to chime in. Here are my proposals

or (although the outer squares should be aligned on a circle)

And here are some others I have been working on

not exactly squares:

starting with

using the following keywords for inspiration:

package, delivery, fast, lean, fresco, winged/feathered, hermes, divine, streaming, modularization, extensible, registry, open source, free, secure, proxy, cache

What I do not like about the current logo

  • way too dark
  • difficult to scale and preserve the image when being used as the website's icon
  • olive is way too small
  • too complex with the stick and the beveled circle surrounding it

what I like

  • the font is very good

Cheers

Alright, trying to fix up some of the things that @silkentrance brought up. Changes:

  • removed the darkened gradient
  • all images have an svg counterpart so size should scale properly for pretty much any use case
  • simplified the olive and made it much larger. (removed stick, made the oval a silhouette)

I've made a repo with my tentative icons: https://github.com/kgrubb/verdaccio-assets

Feedback is welcomed!

Current full logo concept:

To keep from spamming this thread with any more of my concepts, I'll update this post whenever the full logo concept changes.

@juanpicado juanpicado commented Jul 17, 2017

I'm agreed with @silkentrance on this thoughts about the basic keywords

using the following keywords for inspiration:
package, delivery, fast, lean, fresco, winged/feathered, hermes, divine, streaming, modularization, > extensible, registry, open source, free, secure, proxy, cache

Since this is a free contest and there is no 📅 for VerdaccioConf 2017 😄 .... yet 🤓 I think we have enough time to let others to release his love for open source and logo design. I think @030 we can let this open for a while (after summer perhaps) and see what else we can see.

Will the color scheme change (or be change-able) as part of the react ui refactor?

@juanpicado
Copy link
Member

@juanpicado juanpicado commented Jul 17, 2017

Yes, we might do that, but it must be a slow change, I do not think so in that PR. The goal of the ui-refactor was just replace the stack with almost 0 impact in the current style and should be shipped in v2.3.0 But, I'm open for changes in the future of course, perhaps v3.0.0 would be a good moment to play around with it.

What about the contest have two rounds?
The two more voted move to the second phase and then we have a few extra days?
(maybe one week?) To choose between them and the candidates can explore more the design proposals with some variations

Ok guys, I see @kgrubb is agreed. Let's go with that. @rodriguesbreno @rwillians But I think 1 week is not fair, this thread has been open for 2 months already and there is no too much traffic as you can see. I think if we go should be with 1 month for the 2nd phase minimum and take 3 designs instead 2. I just want to do this process as much transparent and fair as possible.

Please, designers, vote 👍 or 👎 about the next phase proposal.

@admorphit some suggestions.

The final logo should be a group of [(icon) + (text)]. One of the objectives of the logo is should fit in the organization profile picture which is not much bigger than 100x100 pixels. A simple text wouldn't accomplish such objective.

@rwillians

@rwillians rwillians commented Aug 27, 2017

@juanpicado may I suggest extending the August 31st deadline then, since this specification wasn't clear?

Also, accordingly to what I've suggest before, all logos presented till the deadline should be elegible for voting in the next fase, otherwise it wiuldn't be fare to the latest ones since this is a low trafic thread.

What do you think?

@juanpicado
Copy link
Member

@juanpicado juanpicado commented Aug 28, 2017

You are right @rwillians there was no specification. I tried to find inspiration about it in the links below and even if I couldn't find a perfect set of rules I think would make sense define some, besides, it might give you some inspiration.

Use cases

Let's define some use cases:

Keywords

I'll quote here @silkentrance words

package, delivery, fast, lean, fresco, winged/feathered, hermes, divine, streaming, modularization, extensible, registry, open source, free, secure, proxy, cache

https://gistbrands.net/10-must-have-logo-criteria/

Color

Since the project's name suggest a color (green). I think the green (verdaccio) should be main one.
The @kgrubb and @rodriguesbreno proposals are a good example of it.

License

I never thought about it, but I guess the creator of the logo should license under CC0 license.

Final steps

The winner should PR (src/logo) his logo including editable assets and render ready according to the use cases defined above.

Proposals Deadline

Initially #237 (comment) I suggested after summer and ends until September 22th I guess we can wait a bit more, but not much longer. I do not want to piss off the early contributors.

Votes

It's pretty hard to count votes using reactions. It's not clear whether 👍 has more value than ❤️. I guess is a matter of taste. So I was looking for a cool methodology and I like this one (graphile/postgraphile#394 (comment)) so I'll copy it.

  • 👍 I vote for this logo (you can vote for as many logos as you want)
  • ❤️ Thanks for the submission, we really appreciate the effort you've put in
  • 👎 I do NOT want to see this, let's keep it positive!
  • 😕 If you think the logo is inappropriate in some way (e.g. violates a trademark, is rude, etc) - if you use this please add a (very polite!) explanation in the comments

Phases

Proposals
A period to post your master piece which will end according to above section.

Final Stage
Following (WebAssembly/design#980 (comment)) only top 5 will go to the final stage. We will create a new thread with the 5 final proposals and we will lock this one. I'll post the 5 proposals and according to the vote section, the most voted is the winner. This stage will start on September 23th and will finish one month later.

Well, I hope you are agreed with this. I'm trying to find the fairest way to drive this process. Thanks all for the proposals, despite we do not have huge traffic I'm happy to see the community moving to improve this project.

@iegik, in my post, I have a link to a repo with all of the asset variations. One of them is just the olive logo (in the green circle), and another is just the olive only (it looks a little bit weird on github's white pages since the olive's outline is white). Is that what you're looking for?

Creating an inverted/dark variant hasn't been super easy. If anyone has variance ideas, let me know. This is what I've come up with so far. I'll try and iterate over it a few more times. Not really happy with it currently.
