This update re-bases Vertcoin Core to upstream Bitcoin Core 0.16.0: https://bitcoin.org/en/release/v0.16.0.

The primary changes are that SegWit transactions are now the default. Additionally the start-up time has been reduced drastically. The upgrade is optional.

As always, back up your wallet prior to upgrading.

The binaries are signed with my PGP key.

This is a pre-release version and thus should not be used in production. A full release will be provided after a period of testing. As always, back up your wallet prior to upgrading.

This is the first release of Vertcoin Core 0.12.0. Over the release candidate the only change in this version are some additional DNS seeds.

As always, remember to backup your wallet before upgrading.

Particularly interesting/fun in this release are the inclusion of the new vtc1 prefixed pay-to-witness-pubkey-hash (p2wpkh) bech32 addresses which will become the default in the future. You can generate these from the debug window console (Help -> Debug Window -> Console) by using the addwitnessaddress command with a p2pkh address from your wallet. e.g. addwitnessaddress VqC5JZZbiuVM5eZ7rcyMeBD3GnJebveeGX false -> vtc1q564855umf73meq4l8svzwdrgeu2lgyrha09pvh. 0.12.0 wallets and the LN wallet Lit can send to this type of address as normal. You can also generate a backwards compatible p2wpkh address using addwitnessaddress VqC5JZZbiuVM5eZ7rcyMeBD3GnJebveeGX -> 3N5SQsujvwWh3DVjVJpU9bfy22W9UGCkYw. This is the same type of "segwit address" that the Ledger app generates and is embedded inside a pay-to-script-hash (p2sh) address.

Backend developers should be aware that this version contains non-backwards-compatible changes to the RPC interface. Developers should ensure compliance with the changes before deploying this upgrade in production systems.

I have included signatures for each of the binaries, signed with my pgp key.

Second release candidate for Vertcoin Core 0.12.0. Over the previous RC, this version contains fixes for installation on OS X and a bug fix for reopening newly created wallets. This version is based off of upstream Bitcoin Core 0.15.1/0.15.2. To see a major list of changes, check the change logs from Bitcoin Core 0.13.2 (which v0.11 was based on) to 0.15.1.

This version of Vertcoin Core requires a new version of P2Pool to work that can be found on this branch: https://github.com/vertcoin/p2pool-vtc/commits/vardiff

As always, be sure to back up your wallet.dat before running this new version, just in case.

This update contains no forks, so upgrading is optional.

This update implements BIP148 (https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0148.mediawiki) which is a "User Activated Soft Fork" for Segregated Witness. This update is in response to two large unknown miners blocking SegWit activation on the Vertcoin network (https://vtconline.org/sf.html) despite >95% of nodes being upgraded and a clear desire from the community to upgrade.

Since over 50% of the network hashrate belongs to the "attackers", they will likely not update and not implement UASF, so this update should be treated in the same way as a Hard Fork. Old wallets will continue to follow whichever chain has the most work, and will only reorg to the SegWit chain once it has more work behind it. Thus, any fork will be temporary, but will likely exist for some time. Therefore, everyone should upgrade to this new wallet to ensure the stability of the network and reduce the risk of a fork.
