Fix Google Services by sideloading the Google Services apk (working) #66

@egladman

I tested this on a dell chromebook 11 Version 37.0.2062.120 (64-bit) STABLE

I was able to get some apps to work that require google services by sideloading the google services apk found at "/system/priv-app/GmsCore.apk". I repackaged the apk with the "Chrome APK Packager" found on Google Play. If I launch the Google Services app then proceed to launch an app that requires services it runs. For example tTorrent Pro and a handful of other apps wouldn't run until I installed Google Services.

I sideloaded the GmsCore.apk from my Moto X running a nightly 4.4.4 CyanogenMod Rom

@P1X3 do you include Google Services WITH the app (as an extra apk) or is that a separate extension (separate app)?

@vladikoff In separate extension. I have since removed it, but the app seems to be working without it which is odd. During the first start it complained about play services, so I installed play services extension (from link above) and app started just fine. Just for the sake of it I removed play store extension and restarted the app that requires play services, and surprising it started just fine.

For me, some apps do that but work fine after a restart. It could be that installing services separately didn't really do anything, but the app just started working after a restart.

tTorrent Lite just works after crashing once. It doesn't need Google Services side loaded. I don't think this solution works.

I have STRIP password manager running fine (it is a paid app), I'm pretty
sure that means that it works. (I'm currently under the impression that
paid apps need GPS)

tTorrent Pro does in fact need Google services to operate. Before sideloading google services I would get errors stating Google services wasn't present. I triple checked my solution before posting this.

Some apps crash with "Google Play Services stopped working" is actually beacuse of the ARM native library.

I tested com.twitter.android and always says "Unfortunately google play services has stopped" I can't see any kind of interaction between twitter and GMS in the view inspectors. I'm not sure if this really works, can somebody confirm?

I said it didn't worked for me, at least on my OS. I can use some applications that are not using Google services, but many of them are calling google services at some point. Then, those applications crashes.

Cheers.

premhowli, I had this problem with the Chrome from my desktop. I believe it has something to do with having other extensions installed before installing the ARChon.
I've had success in open apps in a new machine, a tablet running Windows 8.1 32 bit, Chrome 38.0.02125.104 m 32 and the ARChon 1.2.
The machine never had Chrome installed, so I installed Chrome, and without logging in with my Google account (which already have backup of my extensions) installed the ARChon 1.2 and apps and it worked!
After I login with my Google account, the other extensions were installed and the apps continue to work!
I'm just not happier because the touch screen is not working on apps, only the mouse.

premhowli for runtime vide https://github.com/vladikoff/chromeos-apk/blob/master/archon.md.
ARChon 1.2 - Intel x86 Chrome 32-bit / Chrome OS 32-bit (OSX: Use this in Chrome Stable) (Win7 32-bit: Use something like Chrome Beta 38.0.2125.77 beta-m)
For test use 2048-ARChon.APK
For apps use Chrome APK Packager in Google Play for converter Apps from your Android device.

@TechGuy22 Leave the key in the manifest.json file, and run it with the stock runtime. When you package it for the archon runtime, the key is generally removed and it will not run under the stock Google Android runtime.

@zombiechcken You'll want to first download an APK, then install https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/twerk/jhdnjmjhmfihbfjdgmnappnoaehnhiaf or https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/arc-welder/emfinbmielocnlhgmfkkmkngdoccbadn and use one of them to create the chrome package. If you use twerk, then you'll have to load the package yourself, if you use welder, the loading is done automatically.

@Metagross10048 Check to see if other apps work. It's most likely that this app can't run on your machine with the archon runtime. Some apps just don't work/ will always crash.
Also, it is quite possible that there are some other resources/patch files that it needs which come from the playstore but, you did not include.
Finally, it is worth trying it with a different version of archon.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, so please excuse. Several apks open the Chrome OS Files app when clicked, rather than the subject app, regardless of which packager I use, Arc Welder or Twerk. Any suggestions?
Thanks

First attempts with ARchon in Chrome for 64-bit Ubuntu ... and the mad-ass idea of making Microsoft's Lync/Skyp4Business app work (because Pidgin doesn't cut it) - conversion went OK but I wasn't really that surprised to find that on launch it got stuck after a few seconds. Sooo - where can I find info on debugging and going further with this (is this gonna be heavy-duty Android dev - not a problem but will have to wait - or more like finding the dependencies that I'm missing). Any help welcome.

@bassmanitram I've had luck with an older version of the (normal) skype apk.
Newer versions don't seem to work (probably dependencies that need to be updated/imported).
A lot of the dev will probably be in c (nativeclient) so you'll need to know android, native client, and chrome well. However, other apps probably need these libraries, too, so everyone would benefit.

Why don't you just use web.skype.com?

Speaking of Skype, I currently have an older version of the skype apk that opens and all that, however, there is no audio on the receiving end, as in, there is an issue regarding the app using my microphone. I've already ruled out the microphone being the problem. The app uses my camera just fine which is awkward. I'm currently on a Dell Chromebook 11 (The older model without the Light).

@rocketinventor web.skype.com doesn't work on a chromebook yet. You can message, just no video or audio calls.

nothing worked for me*

OS: Windows 8.1 PRO x64
Chrome 48.0.2547.0 canary (64-bit)
1.2 and beta 2.1 ARChon

tryied programs:

AnTuTU benchmark & 3D Bench - launches and crashes when try to run test or download it
3DMark - launches allows to download benchmarks, but after press RUN it becomes not responding over an hour, so i turn it off
some online and offline games, crashes immediately,
play games saying that play services to old and requires update... - same problem as above mentionend by others

maybe i need to downgrade some my chrome browser?

  • i have noticed something interesting: when i use ARChon Packager in chrome browser it detects installed apps. and result of that was only archon packager itself, so maybe if we can find a way to see google play store, services and games alogside other games and apps it should work like proper emulation system,
any sugestions to manage that ?

I got it working using a SimpleLauncher app I found. Basically, you copy multiple APKs into the same vendor/chromium/crx folder, and the main one (custom-release-I did not memorize the number) runs an APK when you click it. By copying the GPS into it, running them, then going back and running an app needing them, it was like running them both on the same device. When I do it as a separate extension it uses a separate sandbox, thus preventing the GPS from working.

No, it turns out it was a fluke - I removed it at one point and later when I tried again I couldn't get it working...

I'm a bit curious about the sideloading part. Is it just adding Play Services APK (ARM or x86) via ARC Welder / twerk; or is it also having it "run" before starting the other APK?

Is there anyone who is actually successfully using and application that requires Google Play Services? If so, could you please post updated instructions? I've tried the instructions according to the OP and a number of other approaches on both Windows and Linux and have not had any success.

On the Dell Chromebook 11, I tried to load Clash of Clans with ARC Welder and I also had loaded the Play Services app from the drive file. The app doesn't work:

Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong. The same thing happened with the Ballz app.
