Backlights are useful even if you can touch type. If you're using the touchpad to browse the web, and need to switch context by typing. It's much easier to get your fingers into position visually than by touch.

I'd be interested to know what sort of premium you actually pay for having a backlit keyboard. Although I don't use a backlit keyboard very often, I do like having one.
