This is a Call For Consensus (CFC) to move HTML5.2 to Proposed Recommendation (PR).

The HTML editors and WebPlat chairs believe the current HTML5.2 Editor's Draft meets the expected CR exit criteria.

The following things were marked "at risk" during Candidate Recommendation (CR):

  • The inputmode attribute for input elements
  • The menu and menuitem elements
  • The allow-presentation sandboxing flag for the sandbox attribute of an iframe
  • The dialog element
  • The datetime state for the input element
  • The plugin API

The following things were removed during CR because of insufficient interoperability:

  • The inputmode attribute for input elements
  • The menu and menuitem elements
  • The datetime state for the input element

The following items were not removed:

  • The dialog element
  • The allow-presentation sandboxing flag for the sandbox attribute of an iframe

The allow-presentation san dboxing flag is only implemented in Chrome/Blink, but the Presentation API specification is now in CR and further interoperability is expected. A warning has been put in the HTML5.2 specification in the meantime.

The following thing was made "obsolete":

  • The plugin API

This was in response to Adobe announcing plans to sunset Flash, and subsequent announcements from Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Mozilla, indicating their plans to remove Flash support from their respective browsers.

It moves the plugin API (navigator.plugins, navigator.javaEnabled, and navigator.mimeTypes) from the Web App APIs section to the Obsolete section (specifically the requirements.

A warning was added that matches the warning on the <applet> tag: saying this API is in the process of being removed from the web platform (though it may take many years).

An implementation report for HTML5.2 is available.

Please respond to this CFC by the end of day on Thursday 26th October 2017. If you choose not to respond to this CFC it will be taken as implicit support
for the proposal. Your opinion is important though, so please take time to actively respond (by adding a thumbs up or thumbs down to this comment).

The CFC received only positive responses, so it passes without objection. We will send out the transition request to move HTML5.2 to PR now.

Thank you to everyone who responded.
