bbs100 by Walter de Jong <walter@heiho.net> (C) 1997-2015
THE NAME
Why is it called bbs100?
Well, I wanted to call it 'FreeBBS', but the name has been used over and
again by others :( Also, until the year 2000, this code wasn't free at
all. One of my previous projects was called 'bbs10' because it was about
the 10th time I started over again writing a BBS from scratch.
In 1999, I called it bbs99, and with the millenium change I pretended that
it was a millenium bug and called it bbs100 as a joke. Silly joke of course,
but the name stayed.
PRONOUNCIATION
How is 'bbs100' pronounced?
Just "bee-bee-es one-hundred" or "bee-bee-es-hundred" if you like.
WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR VERSION 3.0 TO COME?
I kept making big changes, and when it was finally done, it still had
to be tested for stability for a reasonably long period.
bbs100 does not really adhere to the unwritten rule 'release frequent'.
I'd rather deliver a quality product than an intermediate version that
is full of weird bugs.
PORTABILITY
What platforms does bbs100 run on?
Basically, it runs on any POSIX compliant platform.
So far, I've succesfully compiled and run bbs100 on the following platforms:
Platform Architecture
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linux 3.x ARMv7 (Raspbian)
OS X 10.x intel iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro
Linux 2.x / 3.x intel PC (Debian, RedHat, Slackware, Arch)
Linux 2.x DEC Alpha (as tested by News of MatrixBBS)
LinuxPPC PowerMac (as tested by Joshua Bell of lumpBBS)
FreeBSD 3.x / 4.x intel PC
NetBSD 1.3 Sun Sparc-1
Solaris 2.6 Sun Sparc Ultra-1
SunOS 5.6 Sun Sparc Ultra-1
AIX 4.2.1 with DFS IBM RS/6000
Irix 6.5.x Silicon Graphics Indy/O2/O200/O2000/O3000 32-bit
Irix 6.5.x SGI O3000 64-bit
Unicos 10.0.0.x Cray C90
OS X Apple MacIntosh G5
RedHat Enterprise IA64
SuSE Linux IA64
All this with just configure and make setup.
The portability list changes with each version, so your mileage may vary.
If you got bbs100 running on a platform not listed here, please share your
experiences.
WHAT ABOUT GCC 4?
I have bad experiences with early versions of gcc 4. Maybe it is just me,
but I have seen really strange crashes of code generated with gcc 4, while
it was stable as a rock when built using gcc 3.
On my test system, I explicitly specify the compiler of choice:
CC=gcc-3.3 ./configure --prefix=/home/bbs
gcc 4.1 seems to be OK, but when in doubt, please use gcc-3.3.
IS bbs100 IPv6 ENABLED?
Yes. If you have problems with running bbs100 due to the networking code,
please let me know.
WHAT ABOUT RUNNING UNDER Cygwin?
I did not succeed in building bbs100 3.0 with Cygwin 1.5.18 because it is not
IPv6 ready. Check out http://win6.jp/Cygwin/ for Cygwin IPv6 extensions.
(Your mileage may vary)
Older versions of bbs100 do work with Cygwin, but need a source patch
from http://www.heiho.net/bbs100/patches.html
WHAT DOES request_module[net-pf-10]: fork failed, errno 1 DURING
STARTUP MEAN?
You are running Linux and the system is trying to load the IPv6 module.
errno 1 means you don't have permission to do so. There can be other
error codes as well.
You can safely ignore the message and run on IPv4.
I'M SEEING MESSAGES IN THE BBSLOG LIKE:
Oct 16 00:10:56 W unknown keyword 'from_ip', ignored
Oct 16 00:10:56 W unknown keyword 'from_ipnum', ignored
These keywords in the UserData file changed. So whenever a user that was
saved under version 2.x logs in to bbs100 3.x+, you will get to see these
messages. When the user has been saved in 3.x, the message will no longer
re-occur for that user.
This is a warning that can safely be ignored.
YAWC
Why isn't YAWC mentioned anywhere in the README or CREDITS?
Well, YAWC is yet another clone of DOC by Kenneth Haglund (also known as
KHaglund). Last thing I've heard of YAWC is that its source code is not
publicly available anymore. I haven't seen or spoken with KHaglund for
years now.
Anyway, bbs100 borrows not a single bit of the YAWC code (or in fact,
any other code).
MAILING LIST
Is there a centralized place where people can get together and discuss bbs100
related problems?
There used to be a mailing list, but it is not active anymore.
If you need help on modifying bbs100, the author (me) is always happy to
provide you with some pointers and explain how specific parts of bbs100 work,
and what you should do to make it work the way you want it to work.
