Since I opened this issue we've addressed this by:

  • adopting the peer choking mechanism suggested by BEP3
  • throttling the DHT a bunch, and just recently, rewriting the whole bittorrent-dht module to be a lot faster and lighter on the UDP traffic -- no more crashing cheap routers!
