The primary reasoning for this is that Ctrl+A currently moves to the beginning of the field (the same thing as Home), but most users on Windows will expect this to select the entire contents of the field. I'm not entirely sure if this affects Mac users, who would expect Cmd+A to select the entire contents.

While we're at it, there are other common bindings that could be implemented. For example, Ctrl+arrow keys (Alt+arrows on Mac) is typically expected to navigate by words, and of course this can also be combined with the shift key for the expected effect. Some people on Windows may also expect Shift+Insert and Ctrl+Insert for copy and paste, respectively.

As a linux user who's never used emacs, ctrl+A not selecting everything is unexpected for me as well.

Ctrl+A now selects everything as of 201fafd.

If you're removing Ctrl+A = Home, you should probably also remove Ctrl+E = End.

(There's also Ctrl+U = clear all. I don't mind keeping that one though. It doesn't really get in the way.)

Why the heck is this still open? Other than Ctrl+U, which we decided to keep, these bindings were removed awhile ago.
