release date: 2019-03-05

Expected:

  • Pytorch-1.0.1
  • pandas-0.24.1,
  • PyQt5-5.12.1a
  • Tensorflow-1.13.1 , for Python-3.7 also

Focus of the release:

  • Pyside2-5.12 compatibility of most Qt packages (except Spyder),
  • a bayesian nice solution, (tensorflow-probability for now)
  • tweak infrastructure:
    • Nodejs on ./n hierarchy level instead of ./t/n,
    • uses a 32/64 in install path, for future 7zip installer-made releases,
    • ensure installer build can be INNO, NSIS, or 7-Zip (allowing up to .7z releases in future)
    • remove support of dead ".exe" Python packages
    • cleanup and expose run_complements.bat
  • relook at pep-0397

non-focus: (next)

  • Jupyterlab-1 / Tensorflow-2 look a Q2 2019 thing.
  • that asyncio trend : asyncpg, falcon / responder, ...

remark:

  • experimental python-3.7.2 is becoming available From Microsoft via the Microsoft Store of the Windows 10 1809 release (of this winter, pointing to january).
  • Windows 10 1809 update of 1901 was still a pain in the USB.

    • YES: geoviews
    • ? rtree
  • NOT Spyder4-beta2

  • Tensorflow-2 is 2019 Q2,

  • quicker/better installer :

    • fast lzma2 would accelerate build or allow a mx7 compression (5% smaller, quite impressive)
    • zstd may accelerate build and installation time, with a true Quad-processor.
    • could be shipped in
    • all of this may require digging into 7zip deeper than whished, so waiting further proof of the interest to do so.
  • may include zstandard after zstd 1.4 change of API.

build2 2018-12-26 (Python-3.7.2, Python-3.6.8, a dot build)

Changes from WinPython 2018-05 build1:

  • updated infrastructure:
    • Python-3.7.2, Python-3.6.8,
    • ".exe" legacy packages are no more supported, and so included 7zip can be removed,
    • build system can use any of the 3 types of installers, and/or generate .zip compressed versions
  • Upgraded Packages:
    • holoviews-1.11.0
    • Pyside2 QML part is now kept,
    • pytorch-1 in 3.6 (test)
  • variation per version, for build2:
    • Spyder is not in ps2 release (that will last until pyside2 gains momentum)
    • Tensorflow-1.12 is not in in Python-3.7 releases (uncompatible ... )
    • experimental minimalist "dot" version:
      • zero included packages but pip, setuptools, winpython,
      • packaged simultaneously with the old NSIS installer, and as a simple ".zip".

Areas of particular interest for testers:

  • Python-3.7.2, the minimalist "dot" versions.
  • QML in pyside2

Focus of next build:

  • pandas-0.24.0rc,
  • Tensorflow in 3.7 ?

build3 2018-01-04 (numpy-1.15.4, Tensorflow-1.9 for Python-3.7)

Changes from WinPython 2018-05 build2:

  • rebranded WinPython 2018-05 build3 as WinPython 2019-01 build3,
  • Upgraded Packages:
    • numpy-1.15.4, numba-0.42.0, bokeh-1.0.3,
    • astropy-3.1.1, geoviews-1.6.0
    • (old) Tensorflow-1.9.0 in Python-3.7
  • variation per version, for build3:
    • Spyder is not in ps2 release (that will last until pyside2 gains momentum)
    • Tensorflow-probability is not in Python-3.7 release, due to old Tensorflow version (edward instead)
    • underlying Qt5 is Qt-5.9 for PyQt version, till Spyder supports 5.12, Pyside2 version (ps2) is Qt-5.12
    • popularity test of a WinPython-3.6.8.0ps2 (Pyside2).

Areas of particular interest for testers:

  • numpy-1.15.4 + numba-0.42 stability
  • Keras with the old Tensorflow on Python-3.7.

Focus of next build:

  • pandas-0.24.0rc,

I think it would be wise to wait until Spyder v4.0beta2 is tested and released before including it in a release of WinPython. Currently, I see 10 known bugs in the development version that will be fixed before release:
https://github.com/spyder-ide/spyder/milestones/v4.0beta2
These bugs could cause frustration and waste the time of a WinPython user. If a WinPython user goes to the effort to report any of these bugs, they would be marked as a duplicate.

Instead, I suggest including the latest development version of Spyder-3.3.3. A bug has been fixed since Spyder-3.3.3.dev0-2019-01-12 included in WinPython build4. Thus, this would be an improvement over the released Spyder-3.3.2.

Since there are only 3 open issues, it looks like Spyder-3.3.3 will be released soon:

Spyder is one my most important packages because I use it 8 hours a day during my whole work week. I depend upon it to make a living.

I am not experiencing any of the bugs in the (released) Spyder-3.3.2. Since it can take me a day to learn and test a major revision change in Spyder, I would rather not do this (lose income) until the Spyder team has tested and released v4.0beta2. I think I will like the new features then.

I suspect that many teachers using WinPython for their students have similar concerns as me. But the impact on them is multiplied by the number of students they teach.

A post in spyder-ide/spyder#8668 estimates Spyder-3.3.3 will be released in a couple of days from now.

I agree with @hiccup7 here. I'd even advise against packaging our betas in WinPython. That would simply put more strain on us because you'd force us to support a moving, not-for-general-consumption target (the main reason to have a beta in the first place) and would delay even further a final release.

@stonebig, perhaps you could create WinPython betas and package Spyder betas along with them? That'd be very appreciated by us.

build5 2018-02-16 (pandas-0.24.1, PyQt5-5.12, Tensorflow-1.13.0rc2 with Python-3.7 support)

Changes from WinPython 2019-01 build4:

  • Upgraded Packages:
    • pandas-0.24.1, Spyder-3.3.3, PyQt5-5.12, Scipy-1.2.1, Cython-0.29.5
    • holoviews-1.1.1, pytorch-1.0.1, Tensorflow-1.13.0rc2
  • [reduced] variation per version, for build5:
    • Spyder is not in ps2 release (that will last until pyside2 gains momentum)
  • remark of 2019-02-13: bug on PyQt5-5.12 with Spyder3 Spyder 3 theme spyder-ide/spyder#8748 , so ... using "Spyder 2" icon theme

Areas of particular interest for testers:

  • pandas-0.24.1,
  • solving the "spyder 3" icon theme / PyQt5-5.12.1 incompatibility
  • solving the #711 pyzo mystery

Hope for Next Build (rc):

  • Tensorflow-1.13 final
  • Forgotten tensorflow_probability (in Python-3.7)

This issue affects the combination of Spyder-3.3.3 and PyQt5-5.12:
spyder-ide/spyder#8748

I see these ways to resolve the problem:

  1. Wait until the issue is solved by the Spyder team and include a Spyder-3.3.4 development build in the WinPython release
  2. As @ccordoba12 suggested, downgrade PyQt5 to its 5.11 version
  3. Inform WinPython users that only the "Spyder 2" icon theme is working

More issues with Spyder-3.3.3:
