In order to provide realistic traffic patterns, we aim to design different types of users and applications, so that traffic is generated accordingly.

Regarding users, an example could be an "sporadic user", which probability of using any application packets is low.

Similarly, applications may specify variable duration length and/or size: a VoIP call of X minutes, transferring a file of Y bytes, etc.
