I've download IE10 Win7 & IE11 Win7 VMs but when launching them, the browser is IE9 in both instances.

Agreed, the wrong VM is downloaded.

curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | env IEVMS_VERSIONS="11" bash

Downloading OVA ZIP from http://virtualization.modern.ie/vhd/IEKitV1_Final/VirtualBox/OSX/IE9_Win7.zip to IE9_Win7.zip

I have the same issue.

I believe this is intended, since the VMs are reused, and only IE is updated: https://github.com/xdissent/ievms#reusing-win7-vms

Maybe try removing the vms from virtualbox and running ievms again?

Reusing vm is intended but not the IE :)

I tried multiple times, also removed everything and started from scratch, always the same issue.

Will try from scratch again today but without installing 9 and starting from 10 and 11 first.

I think it is a bit flakey. Check the console for "Installing IE", this is what I have for IE8:

Downloading IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe from http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/C/0/CC0BD555-33DD-411E-936B-73AC6F95AE11/IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe to IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe

I've also unintalled, reinstalled, etc. with no change.

+1 Is there any action on this thread? Is anyone looking into this?

egid commented Apr 8, 2014

I believe this is related to #183, where ievms gets stuck on

Waiting for IE11 - Win7 to be available for guestcontrol...

For IE11 the installer at least drops the exe onto the desktop so for now I can install it from here

@jonathan-fielding unfortunately that doesn't help those of us on Macs

I am using a Mac, but I meant in the IE VM it creates it drops the installer but then does nothing with it

Guess this project is dead? Pretty major issue if you want to test on something other than IE9, no?

Owner

xdissent commented Jun 10, 2014

Not dead - I'm just unable to replicate the issue and most people don't experience it. If anyone can provide more specifics, I'll gladly try to figure out why it's not working for some.

@xdissent Happy to provide whatever you need. What exactly will help?

Same here. I've gotten to the point where I'm willing to screencast the entire process to see if I'm missing something.

Lol @josephspens hopefully it won't come to that. Let's start by getting setup details like virtual box and OS X version numbers. Shasums of the ie installer exes would be cool too since a corrupted installer download is a likely culprit. And of course full logs of the install process are handy.

@xdissent Please let me know (and apologies) if I'm way of base on this:

virtual box: 4.3.10 r93012
os: 10.9.3
SHA1([…]VirtualBox VMs/IE10 - Win7/IE10 - Win7.vbox)= df6ee51b6e9fa2a39cf1e6891f225cabf0144497
SHA1([…]VirtualBox VMs/IE11 - Win7/IE11 - Win7.vbox)= \cbf664f7690471cefc3d6dd2e36876af713f85c5

Close! The actual vbox shasum will change though. I'm looking for the shasum of the exe installers:

➜ ~ shasum ~/.ievms/*.exe

fefdcdde83725e393d59f89bb5855686824d474e /Users/xdissent/.ievms/IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe

Also, it'd be good to know your extpack version:

➜ ~ VBoxManage list extpacks
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 4.3.12
Revision: 93733
Edition:
Description: USB 2.0 Host Controller, Host Webcam, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM with E1000 support.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
Why unusable:

@xdissent Spaced on that. Went looking for exes, settled for vboxes, sorry.

Cool - your ie11 installer is busted. Delete it and rerun ievms to automatically redownload a fresh copy

egid commented Jun 10, 2014

Seems like corrupt installers is something I run into almost every pass. Is there any way for ievms to do the checksum itself when grabbing the files, and trying again if they fail?

Owner

xdissent commented Jun 10, 2014

I considered checksumming all files, but decided against it because they were changing rapidly at the time. They seem to have stabilized quite a bit so it's not a bad idea. I'll see what I can do

Owner

xdissent commented Jun 10, 2014

Did you get 11 to install eventually?

wprater commented Jun 10, 2014

I have deleted all the files and installers and ran again. Still getting the IE9 issue. going to try it one time, to be sure and will send my checksums.

@xdissent 11 installed on my end, but it took a thorough cleaning, three tries, and a probably 20+ minute wait for the VM to actually quit.

wprater commented Jun 11, 2014

I've got them all running as well now after a complete removal of .ievms dir.

also note the backgrounds will still show the IE verbiage, as it's a shared vmdisk if I understand correctly.

Please excuse my brevity; message sent from a mobile device.

MD5 checking: 96546eb
Will merge tomorrow

@xdissent

So if I ls in ~/.ievms:

IE9 - Win7.ova
IE9_Win7.zip
IE10 - Win7-disk1.vmdk
IE10-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe
IE11 - Win7-disk1.vmdk
IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe
ievms-control-0.1.1.iso
ievms-control-0.2.0.iso
lsar
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.2.vbox-extpack
unar
unar1.5.zip

So I:

  1. Delete IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe.
  2. Run curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | env IEVMS_VERSIONS="11" bash

And get:

Checking for VirtualBox
Checking for Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Building IE11 VM
Checking for existing OVA at /Users/dustin/.ievms/IE9 - Win7.ova
Checking for existing IE11 - Win7 VM
Done!

But don't see any change. Did you mean something different by this?

[…]rerun ievms to automatically redownload[…]

Owner

xdissent commented Jun 11, 2014

@dustinhorton yes, that's what I meant, but I forgot to mention you need to delete the IE11 VM itself as well so it will be recreated (and the correct IE installed).

So I deleted IE11 - Win7-disk1.vmdk & ran the curl command again.

Output:

Checking for VirtualBox
Checking for Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Building IE11 VM
Checking for existing OVA at /Users/dustin/.ievms/IE9 - Win7.ova
Checking for existing IE11 - Win7 VM
Done!

Then upon launching VirtualBox, I get:

One or more virtual hard disks, CD/DVD or floppy disk image files are not currently accessible. As a result, you will not be able to operate virtual machines that use these files until they become accessible later.
Press Check to open the Virtual Media Manager window and see which files are inaccessible, or press Ignore to ignore this message.

And if I hit 'Check':

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine IE11 - Win7.
Could not open the medium '[…]/.ievms/IE11 - Win7-disk1.vmdk'.
VD: error VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND opening image file '[…]/.ievms/IE11 - Win7-disk1.vmdk' (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).

xdissent commented Jun 11, 2014

Heh. Ok, open Virtualbox. Select your "IE11 - Win7" VM and hit cmd-R to remove it (if it's in the list at all). Then just to make sure, hit cmd-D and look for "IE11 - Win7-disk1.vmdk" in the media list. If you see it, select it and hit Remove. THEN you can rerun ievms and it will recreate the VM. If you just delete the vmdk without removing it from within Virtualbox, it leaves a zombie disk behind. Sorry I wasn't more clear - it's one of those Virtualbox quirks.

Sweet. That all worked first try (every time I tried before, the curl would fail multiple times before 'succeeding'). IE11 is now running, though I do get this upon opening:
screenshot

Now you didn't mention IE10 for my situation, but it's also (still) only IE9. Should I follow the same steps or are you expecting a different issue there?

Owner

xdissent commented Jun 11, 2014

That's weird - I think @egid got the same dialog. I've never seen it before... probably harmless? =)
The fix should be identical for IE10.

egid commented Jun 11, 2014

I did get that. The VM seems fine, and IE11 works fine. I'm probably going to just create a new save after dismissing it because it only seems to pop up on first boot.

wprater commented Jun 11, 2014

I also got that box. things appear to be running fine now! IE {9,10,11}

Please excuse my brevity; message sent from a mobile device.

Came up for me on the first 2 boots, but not again on the third. Weird.

@xdissent IE10 now running. Thanks/sorry for the hand holding.

Awesome news. And after work I'll merge 96546eb to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future. Thanks for the feedback, guys.
