RF tools utils

This repository is a script toolbox to interact with RF tools like the RF Power Monitor 8000 or the RF Explorer.

Installation

The scripts in the repo use python 3.X and are meant to be used from a Linux machine. The best way to set up the work environment is using virtualenv. You will also need python-tk.

sudo apt-get install python-tk
sudo pip install virtualenv

Then prepare your workspace:

git clone https://github.com/xoseperez/rf-tools
cd rf-tools
virtualenv --python=python3.5 .env
. ./.env/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt

And you are ready to go...

Tools

Power Monitor 8000

The Power Monitor 8000 is an RF power monitor with a wide range (up to 8GHz) and impressive quality for it's price. You can read more about it in my post about RF power monitor tools on the cheap.

pm8000

The pm8000.py script reads the data from the Power Monitor 8000 via USB port and dumps it in a CSV like style with a timestamp and the amplitude of the signal. You can set the center frequency (integer, MHz) and offset (float, dB) form the command line.

RF Explorer

rfexplorer

The rfexplorer.py script allows you to get data from you RF Explorer Handheld Spectrum Analyzer in different ways. The first thing you can do is to get the help from the device:

$ python rfexplorer.py -h
usage: rfexplorer.py [-h] [-m {peak,swipe,plot}] [-r] [-c FREQ_CENTER]
                     [-s FREQ_SPAN] [-d DURATION] [-p PORT]

optional arguments:
  -h, --help            show this help message and exit
  -m {peak,swipe,plot}  output mode
  -r                    reset RF Explorer
  -c FREQ_CENTER        frequency center
  -s FREQ_SPAN          frequency span
  -d DURATION           monitor for these many seconds
  -p PORT               USB port to use, otherwise will try to find it

Usage examples:

Monitor and print peaks from 862.5 to 873.7 for 60 seconds
    python rfexplorer.py -c 868.1 -s 11.2 -t 60

Plot range of frequencies in real time
    python rfexplorer.py -m plot

The three different modes have different outputs. The peak mode is the default one and it's equivalent to the one in the pm8000 script above:

The swipe mode will output full range data for the scanned frequencies as a CSV file too:

Finally the plot mode mimics the screen of the RF Explorer in your computer:
