May I suggest something similar to this:

<p:declare-step type="p:dbquery">
<p:option port="driver" as="xs:string" />
<p:option port="url" as="xs:string" />
<p:option port="userid" as="xs:string" />
<p:option port="password" as="xs:string" />
<p:option port="resultElement" as="xs:QName" />
<p:option port="query" as="xs:string" />
<p:option port="timeout" as="xs:positiveInteger" select="30" />

 <p:output port="result" primary="true" content-types="application/xml" sequence="false"/>

</p:declare-step>

The result would be a document with an arbitrary main element and each of the result rows might be an element with the name of the resultElement and each resulting fields as attributes of the resultElement.
Would also suggest DbUnit export query elements as an example.

Needs some experimental implementations as proof-of-concept; standardized output is not part of our spec.
