# Hello World
### An introduction to open source.

## What is open source?

It is a philosophy that promotes the free redistribution of a product’s complete source, including the product, design, implementation and documentation. This means that you have everything you need to fully understand what it does, why it does it and how it works so you are able to use and improve the product yourself. Although it’s heavily related to software development it’s increasingly being applied in other fields, such as science and medicine.

## What's so great about that?

It promotes sharing knowledge openly and for free. Whether it’s sharing the best practice for computing the Fibonacci sequence, or revealling mistakes you’ve made so others can learn from them. It helps open up the latest technology to everyone or can be as simple as giving everyone the perfect recipe for cupcakes. It gives anyone a chance to give something back to their field and supports a sense of community by helping push ideas forward.

Community is what makes open source work. By sharing your own product you allow people to collaborate and improve on the work you’ve started. Open source allows anyone to start a product and find other like minded people to contribute. Imagine what you can achieve when you are collaborating with a group of people fascinated by the same things as you.

## What do I need to get involved?

A willingness to work with others, *a computer*, *a pencil* and *a notebook*.

## How can I get involved?

The great thing about open source is you don’t have to be technically orientated to get involved. You can contribute to the design, documentation, reporting problems, writing code or simply just share your ideas on how the project can be improved. All you need to do is find a project that you’re interested in or relates to you. Then just get stuck in and get involved with what’s going on. If you’re stuck on finding projects related to programming Github is a good place to start looking. Github is a code host, that allows you to share your code and collaborate with friends, co-workers, classmates, and complete strangers. Most of the great open source projects are kept online at Github – including this book.

## How can I start my own project?

You just need to get your idea out into the world. Below is a basic plan to get your started.

### Start your project on your own

Develop your idea and create a document that outlines your idea. Make sure you include what you want to achieve and why.

### Build a prototype

Still on your own, start to build your project. This doesn’t have to be a polished version, more of a prototype that reinforces your written document. This should form the base of your project.

### Share your project

Share it all online, whether it’s in a blog post, Github or it’s own website. Show the world your idea and what you want achieve. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.

## Got any projects I can have a look at?

Of course I do. There are so many great open source projects, but my own personal interests lead them into software development. I’ve created two projects especially for this book that you can openly contribute to. Feel free to contribute, create your own versions, or reuse any aspect of these projects in your own work.

### Hello World
That is this book is completely open source. This includes every aspect of it; the design, text, icons, everything.
