Make sure you are using the latest version: run youtube-dl --version and ensure your version is 2016.07.17. If it's not read this FAQ entry and update. Issues with outdated version will be rejected.

Description of your issue, suggested solution and other information

I would like a check for youtube_dl when seaching / trying to play a Youtube video from a URL that then throws a Error saying that Youtube-dl is out of date.

This would be nice and helpfull. With some hackery it could be possible I hope to scrape the Release parts of github tags when (when the release is ready of cource).

This will require an additional callhome request each time youtube-dl is executed that is unacceptable.
