If cyrillic word is passed as search request - the error is displayed in response. Same command line asking for english "cat" from youtube.com works perfectly well:
$ youtube-dl -s -v "gvsearch10:cat"
(successful downloads go here)

UPDATE: it seems, ytsearch handles cyrillic without errors.
