Got this error on both public and private video.

ERROR: unable to open for writing: [Errno 22] invalid mode ('wb') or filename:

Can you post the entire output you get when you run youtube-dl with the --verbose option?

Try running

youtube-dl "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-qjyEn3bjs"

And yes, use --verbose if that doesn't work. Make sure you have write permission for the file.

For what it's worth this video downloads without problem on my Linux (Debian) machine:

I think @joelg236 needs to enclose the url in double quotes, the & character seems to have a special meaning in his shell too.

For me the issue was because the exe didn't have write access to the c: folder i was trying to download the video into on my windows 8 box. I moved it to another folder and all was ok after that
