## Please follow the guide below

  • You will be asked some questions and requested to provide some information, please read them carefully and answer honestly
  • Put an x into all the boxes [ ] relevant to your issue (like that [x])
  • Use Preview tab to see how your issue will actually look like

Make sure you are using the latest version: run youtube-dl --version and ensure your version is 2017.05.14. If it's not read this FAQ entry and update. Issues with outdated version will be rejected.

  • I’ve verified and I assure that I'm running youtube-dl 2017.05.14

Before submitting an issue make sure you have:

  • At least skimmed through README and most notably FAQ and BUGS sections
  • Searched the bugtracker for similar issues including closed ones

What is the purpose of your issue?

  • Bug report (encountered problems with youtube-dl)
  • Site support request (request for adding support for a new site)
  • Feature request (request for a new functionality)
  • Question
  • Other

The following sections concretize particular purposed issues, you can erase any section (the contents between triple ---) not applicable to your issue

If the purpose of this issue is a bug report, site support request or you are not completely sure provide the full verbose output as follows:

Add -v flag to your command line you run youtube-dl with, copy the whole output and insert it here. It should look similar to one below (replace it with your log inserted between triple ```):

$ youtube-dl -v 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFYu22hZew'

Description of your issue, suggested solution and other information

When recoding downloaded media to MP4 as directed by the recode-video mp4 argument, youtube-dl doesn’t specify to FFMPEG which file is incompatible with MP4 and therefore necessary to convert. As a result, FFMPEG recodes all of the files given as per the defaults, leading to a loss of quality and a massive amount of wasted CPU time.

-c:v copy or -c:a copy should be specified for any formats that are already supported by MP4. It shouldn’t be re-encoding H.264 video just because I downloaded Opus audio.

This is a rather serious problem, as it has the potential to tie up a computer’s CPU for hours to no benefit, and can affect anyone using the recode-video argument.

To be clear, I’m asking that the ffmpeg command be run with -codec copyfor every stream except those that youtube-dl has determined are not supported in the target container. In the above example, the command that should be run is:

/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg -y -i ‘file:/Users/accountname/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Videos/How Long Will the Curiosity Rover Last.mkv’ -codec:video copy -preset veryslow -crf 18 -b:a 256k 'file:/Users/accountname/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Videos/How Long Will the Curiosity Rover Last.mp4'

This is often 150 times faster, and produces a file with better quality and smaller filesize. It would tremendously benefit a relatively large amount of people, and it shouldn’t require much work to implement for anyone who understands the relevant code. Please fix this behavior.

Post the full output of youtube-dl when run with -v, i.e. add -v flag to your command line, copy the whole output and post it in the issue body wrapped in ``` for better formatting. It should look similar to this:

@dstftw Was that a bot making that comment? I clearly did that when I opened the issue.

Your log is incomplete. Do not remove any output from it. I'm not going to fortune tell what command you are running and what's in your config.

Oh, sorry, I have no idea how the top got cut. I’ll run it again and edit the comment, my apologies.

@dstftw I’ve replaced the log in my original comment with a more complete one. Again, sorry about that. I’ve used tee to make sure I don’t miss anything this time. By the way, it took 117 minutes to complete for a five minute 1080p video, and the downloading alone literally took a few seconds.
