Description of your issue, suggested solution and other information

FFmpeg does not currently support CEA-608 closed captions, which results in the above error. As a workaround, youtube-dl could automatically prefer other subtitle formats when available (as it is the case with nick.com in the example), without having to manually specify the preference with --sub-format. Or a parser for this could be implemented similar to the TTML parser. The open source CCExtractor project may be helpful.
