How can I set cookies when embedding youtube-dl?

I have a Python script, in which I've embedded youtube-dl. Now, I'd like to download a video, but I need to pass a few cookies to it so that youtube-dl can actually extract the password protected video URL. How can I do this?

I've looked at the documentation and I can't find an option to do so.
