Your version is too old. Most likely you have installed it via apt-get. As Debian/Ubuntu people don't update this package often, please uninstall it from apt-get and install the latest version.

@yan12125 right, foolishly i thought that I'd have reasonable versions as I'd updated my system to the latest Ubuntu.

sorry for the lazy issue - i wasn't expecting help, I just included it on the off chance that it was of some use to people here.

I need to talk to Ubuntu packaging team... There are at least 100 "bugs" due to old Ubuntu youtube-dl versions. They should really maintain their packages correctly.
