I encounter a similar situation. Additionally, every time I update (youtube-dl -U), I receive the message:

It looks like you installed youtube-dl with a package manager, pip, setup.py or a tarball. Please use that to update.

@SeraphiPod That means the update failed. Please open a new issue where you also explain how you have installed youtube-dl.
