  • I've verified and I assure that I'm running youtube-dl 2018.01.14
  • At least skimmed through the README, most notably the FAQ and BUGS sections
  • Searched the bugtracker for similar issues including closed ones

What is the purpose of your issue?

  • Bug report (encountered problems with youtube-dl)

I've started getting this error with soundcloud downloads recently:

[debug] Encodings: locale UTF-8, fs utf-8, out UTF-8, pref UTF-8
[debug] youtube-dl version 2018.01.14

ERROR: Unable to download JSON metadata: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized (caused by HTTPError()); please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you are using the latest version; type youtube-dl -U to update. Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output.

It happens with all accounts and urls as far as I can tell. I've tried it from behind a VPN and TOR and it still doesn't work, so I don't think it's a local problem.
